About
Ray Traced Shadows within World of Warcraft Shadowlands have now been enabled on the match’s Beta/PTR, and the very first comparison shots have now surfaced on the internet.
Back in April of this year, Blizzard added Ray Traced Shadow options to the match’s Alpha. Unfortunately, real Ray Traced Shadows were not allowed just yet and those in the Alpha were only able to view the new options. According to the option’s description, it”improves shadow quality together with beam design, which produces shadows with much more natural softness, greatly increased precision, and out of other light sources.”
Players in the alpha Could pick one of the following Ray Traced Shadows options:
Fast forward four weeks and we can now finally see how the new shadows seem in the upcoming Shadowlands expansion. Earlier this week we reported that the new NVIDIA Game Ready Driver added support for the looming new feature in Shadowlands, and several Beta/PTR players have now shared some screenshots comparing Shadowlands with without the Ray Traced Shadows enabled.
According to Blizzard, the new option within Shadowlands uses DirectX Ray Tracing 1.1 (DXR 1.1) along with also a DXR 1.1-capable driver must use Ray Traced Shadows. We’ve contained the shared contrast screenshots down under. As can be seen in those shots, and as might have been expected, the effects of Ray Traced Shadows are not that obvious but do seem to be more powerful in darker areas with low lighting.
Blizzard has updated their minimal required spec to include 100GB storage space for the two SSDs and hard drives. However, they warn players who functionality of your hard drive may influence Shadowland’s gaming experience.
A couple of Shadowlands beta testers have reported that running the game on an HDD hasn’t affected their gameplay or performance in any substantial way.
However, it’s most likely a great idea to run this game in an SSD anyhow (here is our list of Best SSDs). If you look at games like Call of Duty htmlodern Warfare that do not need an SSD but have very large storage requirements, the game is playable but you will encounter painfully long loading times. It is also possible to potentially encounter”hitching” where the HDD is not fast enough to flow resources in real time.
