HOW DO YOU CHOOSE AN ACTING SCHOOL?
In our new Archive of Italian Acting Schools you will find many results. In each city there can be many schools, each with its own idea of teaching. So how to choose the most suitable one? A good word of mouth from school-goers is certainly an excellent business card, just as being able to attend year-end essays and performances by the stable Company (if any) will certainly give you an idea of the level you could reach.
1. THE PROGRAM.
First of all you will have to look at the duration of the courses.
Some schools offer courses in a single year, focusing on a single aspect of acting, or wanting to show you as much of the world of theater as possible, without adequately delving into the various topics covered.
In the first case, the annual course, if structured in such a way as to go into detail on the subject matter (the Commedia dell’Arte, the Stanislavski method, etc …), can undoubtedly be of great use. However, this type of course is usually more suitable for those who have already taken a basic course and want to improve themselves. Remember that a good actor never stops learning but must always want to fill his suitcase with new and stimulating learning experiences.
In the second case, however, I advise you not to pay too much attention to these “pout-pourri” courses: you would go home with even more confused ideas than when you started!
A good course should last 2 to 3 years. This way you can focus on individual aspects for some time, allowing you to test yourself with intermediate essays to assess your level of learning.
Also check that the study of diction is present in the program.
Not all Acting Schools in fact contemplate a good diction course (here’s how to choose a good diction course) and if you want to attend a well-set course with the possibility of a future in this world, you should pay attention to time and care. that the School dedicates to this fundamental aspect of acting.
A few hours or “a brief excursus on the fundamental aspects of diction” will certainly not be enough to set the voice in the right way and to pronounce the words perfectly.
A good diction course should last at least 6 months and remember that once finished it requires constant training.
Diction Manual
Theater Diction Manual for Everyone! You can download it here: www.teatropertutti.it/manuale-di-dizione/
For this reason we have created a Manual of Diction, in which we explain in a simple and clear way the main rules of diction.
There are also dozens of original exercise texts, accompanied by audio examples to hear the correct diction.
It is also in digital format, so that you can always have it at hand and keep your mind in training.
As for the other points of the program, they are basically similar everywhere. To evaluate the seriousness and professionalism of a school you could compare the program of those you are considering (probably in your city) with that of major schools or academies. I know, it’s not an equal comparison, but it can serve you as a starting point.
