Understanding Your Feet

There are a number of anatomical components that make up the human foot and ankle. Since most of the foot structures have a rather superficial anatomical placement, it is easy for your foot doctor in Upland to know which part is affected in an injury. The different structures that make up your foot include bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves. The foot is made up of 26 bones, 30 joints, and more than 100 muscles, traditionally divided into three areas, the forefoot, the midfoot, and the hindfoot.

The forefoot is the part of your foot containing the 5 toe bones (the phalanges) and the five longer bones – the metatarsals.

The midfoot is formed by a pyramid-like collection of bones – namely cuneiform bones, the cuboid bone, and the navicular bone.

The hindfoot is formed by the talus and the calcaneus (the heel bone). The talus bone supports the bones in your calf (tibia and fibula), forming the ankle. Calcaneforms the largest bone in your foot.

Update 2021: Hilarious. My split half totally grew back. Was this the 2nd doctor to do a poor job of burning the nail bed closed? Or is my half toenail supernatural? Who can say.

After a severe trauma 7 years ago with another foot doctor taking care of an ingrown toenail, leaving me with a split toenail starting at the nail bed, I was skeptical about the process with another doctor. I basically lived with 2 toenails, one trying to overlap the other. It wasn't a huge issue but it was uncomfortable and inconvenient. When I was kickboxing this summer I pulled back the smaller one because it was raised off my toe a little bit. I knew it was time to do something.

The shots hurt as much as I remembered, but the process was smooth and my toe never hurt after. I was worried when the numbness went away I was going to be in agony. At no point did I need any pain medication following my procedure. I'm very happy with this office and I would recommend it to anyone who is suffering an ingrown and would like to chemically burn the nail bed closed. When I arrived I was signed in quickly and they reviewed my benefits with me so I could be aware of how much I’d have to pay.  I was taken in within 5-10 minutes, and only waited in the exam room for 3-5 minutes before Dr. Breshears came in.  She was very thorough with her questions and provided all the information I needed to understand what my condition is.  She was gentle with my very painful feet.  She gave me two options for one of my issues, and outlined the plan of action for the other problem.  She and the nurse were very friendly.  I left feeling like I was well taken care of.
